THE FLASH BACK
The
proposed John Michuki Memorial park in Nairobi is being undertaken
through private-public partnerships. The leisure park for families
to relax will be set up at the Globe Cinema near Nairobi River. The
proposal was made yesterday by a committee headed by Equity Bank CEO
James Mwangi and Environment and Mineral Resources PS Ali Mohamed.
They two visited the area to inspect ongoing works that include the
construction of footbridges, public toilet, floodlights, landscaping
and beautification.
Ali said the government has hired 2,000 workers to clean up the Nairobi River basin and will construct a pathway along the river to mark a clear boundary of the riparian land. He said the river will be transformed to be a major attraction in the city, with activities such as water sports.
The park was conceived in recognition of the former Environment minister's restoration of Nairobi River and the environment as a whole. Previously the identified section was full waste paper and the ministry had to remove massive tones of garbage from the 26 acre piece of land before planting trees.

once upon a time this area was some piece of shum, but the late minister together with other stakeholders had a vision to revolutionize this place. If you had visited this place when it looked like some garage I bet you would conquer with me that alot of effort has been put into this project. There were mechanics along the road that runs from the globe flyover to the road that connects to the museum hill. Would I be wrong to say the mechanics are the ones who brought all the filth? Maybe yes or no.Ali said the government has hired 2,000 workers to clean up the Nairobi River basin and will construct a pathway along the river to mark a clear boundary of the riparian land. Some of the images like this show you exactly how the river looked like.Notice the garbage that filled the waters of the river. Actually you would be very mistaken to think that there is life in such a river. Lets just call the river "dead"
This is just very shameful to any minister who sat in the Ministry of Environment and never took any initiative to clean up Nairobi Rivers. Here at DGA we tell them the "Road Hog WAY - Shame on ...................YOU"
Another picture depicting what was:
I bet these guys had nightmares that night. How horrible could this get. In such days, I would never have wished to be a fish. Really that would have been hatred of the highest degree. And imagine, fish do not close their eyes, meaning their eyes would have been open to raw sewer. Anyway that was then, this is now.
THE FAST-FOWARD
This is what you see in this park today. I am sure very few Nairobians have been to this park to witness, ni kama ndrama ni kama findio. Trust me. Especially for those who appreciate what this place used to look like and how it is now. As much as Maasai market takes place here every tuesday, very few guys have gone to the furthest end of the park.In this section, it is less talk.............................
LUNCHBOX is a section where you scroll down without much to do. Just appreciate what you see :)
If you have forgotten what a meander looks like from your schooling days, well this is a new refresher!!!!! |
Nice River Bank, The Nairobi River it is |
I feel like I should get lazy when I look at such eye catching pictures!!!! NIIIIICE for relaxing !! |
The footpath can speak for itself I guess |
Beautiful park indeed |
Tree plantation reduces erosion, have you planted one this year? |
By the Rivers of Babylon......you know that song hah, now fill the gap. By the Rivers of N__RO_I |
Just look at that!!! Mind boggling i say |
This guy must be in the meditation zone, strolling freely into the meditation hour... |

I believe this park by now should be a must visit. Instead of visiting Uhuru and Central Parks all through, the JMMP is an alternative.
That is all from Drip-Green Africa, and all we can say is kudos to the brains behind such a project.
